50 years ago, Ford introduced the Mustang Cobra Jet, named after its 7.0-liter V8 engine. For the anniversary, the manufacturer builds a Dragster without road approval.

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet was a legend on the quarter mile. With 340 specified (and more than 400 real) horsepower, he was one of the fastest from 1968 – and one of the most durable. Its 7.0-liter engine delivered a lot of power at low speeds. So he exceeded the load better than other drives.

For the 50 anniversary, Ford is building a Mustang Cobra Jet again. This time with a smaller engine, but much more power. The “Coyote” V8 from the Mustang GT gets 5.2 liters of cubic capacity and enough power for records: Ford announces that the new Cobra Jet will complete the quarter mile in about 8.5 seconds – with a final speed of well 240 km/h.

This makes the 2020 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet too fast for road approval. Dodge currently holds the record for the fastest quarter mile car with license plates. The Challenger demon raced down the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds – on even more legal Semi Slicks. The Mustang stands on full slicks without road release, reared on rims of weld racing.

When the model was changed to the current generation Mustang, Ford turned on individual suspension on the rear axle. In the Cobra Jet, the complex construction flies out of the car. It is replaced by a 9-inch rigid axle, combined with a four-bar suspension and special shock absorbers.

In the car, there is a roll cage and racing. Ford talks about a “turnkey racecar” – that is, a race car that is ready to be handed off. The dealer’s yard will leave Cobra jets on the trailer: The car is considered a sports equipment and has no VIN number – so it is nowhere to be approved. The vehicle is to start at official quarter-mile events in various classes.

2020 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Performance; Fastest

It is not the first time that Ford has recreated the name “Cobra Jet”. Lastly, two years ago there was a special model of the Mustangs, also designed only for the Dragstrip. Ford then gave a time of fewer than nine seconds for the short straight – that is, a few tenths of a second slower than the new version. Ford never officially delivered the performance. Rumor has it that it was about 1,000 hp.

The new will probably be stronger. 68 specimens are to be produced – a reference to the year of birth of the Cobra Jet. Ford sells the cars exclusively with white or red lacquer. The price will be around 100,000 US dollars.
