2020 Audi A6 Avant Review | The new generation of the A6 wagon is distinguished by comfort and embedded technology worthy of the top categories.
The break A6 persists and signs. In the wake of the sedan, this luxury vehicle, which combines business with pleasure, is modernizing without abandoning its fundamentals. The lines turn their backs to any audacity but the marked shoulder of the rear wings, the LED headlights and the ribs of sills renew a kind gladly more popular than the sedan from which it flows. The extension of the roof to the tailgate contributes to the fluidity and elegance of the design. The entry-level is thus credited with an excellent Cx aerodynamic (0.27), beneficial to the lowering of sound level and consumption.
2020 Audi A6 Avant Redesign
The change of generation accompanies a lot of novelties. The dimensions do not vary (4.94 m in length) but the increase in the wheelbase benefits the habitability, especially the rear seats. Despite the MLB Evo platform and a body made of aluminum and steel, the 2020 Audi A6 Avant failed to slim down. Our test vehicle, a 50 TDI model with S Line trim, was 2 tons thick. Status quo also on the load capacity side. The electric tailgate (simply pass the foot under the shield) opens on a volume unchanged from 565 to 1680 liters by tilting the back seat back (40/20/40). Depending on the configuration, the Audi tilts from 75 to 140 liters against the Mercedes E-Class estate which boasts the best values in the segment.
As for the BMW 5 Series Touring, it declares a few more liters (570 to 1700 l). If the 2020 Audi A6 Avant does not have a flat floor for failing to tilt the rear seats, the functionality has been neat. Space accommodates a system of rails on which four flexible attachment points allow stowing objects. As an option, a kit structures the trunk with telescopic bars and straps. Perceived quality borders on perfection. Obviously, the equipment has been developed to last.
2020 Audi A6 Avant Interior
The indoor atmosphere is also up to the reputation of the rings. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case for brand access models such as the A1, where the quality of materials has declined by several cases. None of this aboard the 2020 Audi A6 Avant whose refinement plunges the occupants into a really high-end world. Packed with equipment, our test vehicle (S Line finish) thus had the digital instrumentation and information screen 10.1 inches. The number of buttons is reduced to the essentials and the command dial is now removed.
The ergonomics have been simplified: the two touch screens superimposed are used as a smartphone. The one on the top level controls the navigation, the hi-fi but also all the functions of the vehicle, apart from the air conditioning and the comfort settings managed by the lower screen. BMW has shown the way and it is Audi’s turn to steer the information screen towards the driver. It gains comfort but nothing replaces the head-up display to never leave the road eyes. This device will be associated with the parking assistance package and a road assistance package including help with keeping in line, reading road signs, autonomous driving level 2 and the emergency avoidance assistant. The A6 escapes through modern vehicles. Although family oriented, this break is cut for four people. Blame it on a central square rear narrow and handicapped by the presence of a transmission tunnel.
A6 Avant Performance
After several tens of kilometers behind the wheel of the 50 TDI version, we can only despair of the lack of interest for diesel. This technology has certainly lost the battle of public opinion but its qualities still make it a formidable rolling machine. The 286 horsepower 3-liter V6 from our A6, coupled with 8-speed automatic transmission, shines with its creaminess and vigor. Seconded by a comfortable couple, the engine never gives the impression of force. It can count on the reinforcement of a light hybridization in 48 volts which would allow a gain of 0.7 l / 100 km, and the possibility of opting for a pneumatic suspension. The latter enhances the comfort that accommodates in our case a lowered sport chassis of 20 mm. And, in terms of consumption/autonomy, we know a little better. A gasoline model cannot say that much. Audi claims CO2 emissions of only 151 g / km according to the correlated NEDC standard, which translates into a standardized consumption of 5.8 l / 100 km.
With its four-wheel drive, the 2020 Audi A6 Avant 50 TDI is a true TGV of the road. The kilometers are in sovereign comfort. When the route forgets the monotonous highways, the use of four-wheel steering will be necessary to approach the agility of a ballerina. Under these conditions, the bill will reach dizzying heights. Our test vehicle was loaded with nearly $33,685 of additional equipment. The bill was close to $112,285. To ride in a concentrate of innovations and technology is at this price.
